You know, I expected to have been finished with Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden hours ago, but fate has evidently conspired against me to prevent this from happening. The next-to-last mission is a huge pain in the ass. I played while watching the North American League of Legends championship series today. It took me the entirety of that broadcast to just barely not finish the mission. Once I'd come very close to the end, I realized I'd run out of resources and I would not be able to finish. That whole process took about five or six hours.
Playing through the mission and failing so many times did net me a lot of levels and money, though--so eventually it made the process a lot easier. I played very carefully on my most recent runthrough and saved my Spirit Commands until the fateful encounter with Sanger Sombold, the Sword of Magus. After Sanger healed himself to full three separate times, I attacked him with Kamille in Zeta Gundam with a Soul-boosted Waverider Assault, chunking him for something like 15k damage. I'm kind of surprised Kamille ended up being my strongest character considering his mostly average performance throughout the game. I suspect it must have something to do with his Newtype ability and the fact that I've assigned a decent number of upgrades to him.
Anyway, I just now managed to finally conquer that mission and I still have one more to go. If it's anywhere near as difficult, I imagine I'll be stuck on it for awhile as well. I'd really hoped I would be finishing this game tonight (so I could finally move on to that Fire Emblem game) but I wouldn't be surprised at all if that didn't happen. It's already 9 PM and I've gotta work tomorrow at 9. I should get to bed by at least midnight. As harrowing an experience as that last mission was, I don't expect I'll be able to finish this one in only three hours. We'll see, though.
I wanted to write up an entry on the units I used and some information on them like I did with Super Robot Wars J, but I think I'll probably save that for. . .well, hopefully tomorrow. It all depends on whether I finish it soon. Because I'm so close, I feel more motivated than usual to push through to the end, but this series tends to have very frustrating final encounters. I still remember the horror of the final meeting with Ingram Prisken in Super Robot Wars Original Generation. I have no expectations that this will be any less difficult. In fact, since this game has been unaltered from its original Japanese incarnation, I can only imagine it will prove to be even more difficult. Still, I'm hoping I'll be able to finish it tonight--if only so I don't have to worry about it anymore. I really like the game, but c'mon, enough is enough.
I really hope more Super Robot Wars games receive fan translations in the future. Despite a number of frustrating gameplay elements, I really do enjoy them. There's not really anything else much like it. Fire Emblem is probably the closest thing there is, but it's a game built around classes. No other game has a huge lineup of unique characters all with their own individual abilities like that. It's also really cool that all of those characters are from different anime series. Watching the anime they're from adds another layer of enjoyment--and it's what inspired me to watch the entirety of Mobile Suit Gundam.
I expect I'll attempt to tackle one of the earlier SRW titles in the near future. My obsessive tendencies compel me to start from the beginning--but after playing it for a few minutes I have to confess that it's pretty lackluster. The original SRW title was on Game Boy and it is very primitive. It might be better just to start at SRW2, which I happen to know recieved a fan translation from Aeon Genesis, much like Alpha Gaiden did. I'm definitely going to take a break from the series after I'm done here, though--at least for a little while.
